Maya and her mother Carol, 2022

After working with The Cambridge Math Circle for over two years, Maya Mau has decided to bring what she learned to her community in Ithaca.

Though Maya grew up in New York City, she spent a lot of time in Ithaca because her mother grew up in Ithaca. Her mother, Carol Rial, was part of the founding class of Lehman Alternative Community School and Maya's aunt and uncle both attended schools in the Ithaca City School District.

Maya started as a sophomore at Cornell University in Fall 2021 as a student in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Since then, she has prioritized amplifying the voices of underrepresented populations and making her environments more equitable and diverse.

Maya has made herself at home on Cornell campus as a member of a social impact consulting club, an ILR School Peer Mentor, the Editor-in-Chief of The Workplace Review, a teaching assistant at the SC Johnson Graduate School of Management, and a note-taker for Student Disability Services. Some previous involvements include working as an immigration law research assistant at Cornell Law School and as a media archivist for the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies.

She is excited to have launched Ithaca Math Circle and had the opportunity to work with children in her mother's hometown and her own second home!
